Under the Radar is a bold new performance series presented by
Yerba Buena Center for the Arts:

“Experimental artists embody the soul of the local performance scene. YBCA enlisted the help of four local independent curators – Keith Hennessey, Sean San Jose, Francis Wong and Isabel Yrigoyen – to uncover them. Join us as we celebrate artists who challenge the status quo in ways we couldn’t imagine, and in places we didn’t know existed.”

Under the Radar II performers include:

Michelle Amador – jazz vocalist and composer

Scott Amendola – renowned drummer taking center stage solo

Sean Dorsey – performing a dance theater journey into the world of the gender outsider

Dohee Lee – in a performance piece based on Korean shaman ritual ceremony

Ise Lyfe – melding spoken word, hip-hop and theater

Jose Navarrete – performing a political dance piece investigating border crossings

At Under the Radar II, Sean Dorsey and Mair Culbreth perform Dorsey’s acclaimed duet ‘6 Hours’. Dorsey and Culbreth were recently nominated for an Isadora Duncan Dance Award for Ensemble Performance of Dorsey’s choreography.

‘6 Hours’ is a dance theater journey into the world of the gender outsider. When two new lovers set off on a road trip to see family (who don’t know yet that their child is transgender), the couple’s budding relationship is put to the test. Playful, evocative and deeply moving, Dorsey’s work fuses dance, theater, storytelling and original scores to dive into aspects of coming out and living as transgender and queer.

Sean Dorsey was recently named one of the international dance scene’s most promising choreographers by BalletTanz, Europe’s leading dance magazine and continues to be profiled and lauded in the local press. Mair Culbreth has danced with Fresh Meat Productions since 2004, and is also a member of Lizz Roman and Dancers and Company Mecanique.

‘6 Hours’ was supported by a San Francisco Arts Commission Individual Artist Commission and a Queer Cultural Center Commission funded by the San Francisco Foundation.
