Award-winning dance-theater trailblazer Sean Dorsey returns to the stage with a powerful new work. The Secret History Of Love is an evening-length suite of dances that reveals the underground ways that LGBT people managed to survive and love one another in decades past.
Dorsey has attracted national acclaim and audiences for his signature dance-narrative style. The Secret History Of Love employs full-bodied post/modern-dance, riveting storytelling, oral history interviews, physical theater and original music.
The Secret History Of Love was created during a 2-year national LGBT Elders Oral History Project. The voices and life stories of LGBT seniors that Dorsey recorded are heard and seen onstage.
An inter-generational cast of 5 dancer-performers embody the historic narratives – expressing intimate accounts of violence, first love, risk, loss and enduring relationships. The audience is immersed in a multi-layered soundscore featuring multiple voices, life stories, sounds and original music.
The first work of its kind in the U.S., The Secret History Of Love received major national commissions and will tour to cities including Boston, Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Miami, Santa Cruz, Chico, Claremont, Philadelphia and San Antonio. From 1920’s speakeasies to wartime love affairs, from 1950s police raids to underground cabarets to passionate love letters, the “love that dared not speak its name” explodes onstage in this powerful dance-theater production featuring a stellar cast of dancer-performers: Sean Dorsey, Juan De La Rosa, Brian Fisher, Nol Simonse and Shawna Virago.
The Secret History Of Love features full-bodied, luscious dancing and first-hand tales of great risk, passionate love, impossible courage, heart-breaking loss, and bold resistance – revealing the great resiliency and strength of the heart and spirit … even in the face of great danger and devastating violence.
With his signature fusion of modern dance, storytelling and theater, Sean Dorsey is blazing a trail celebrated by critics and sold-out audiences alike.
