THE MISSING GENERATION is a powerful dance-theater work that gives voice to longtime survivors of the early AIDS epidemic. The show is a love letter to a forgotten generation of transgender and LGBTQ survivors – people who witnessed and experienced the loss of part of an entire generation to AIDS in the 1980s and 1990s.

Sean Dorsey created the work over a 2-year period after recording 75 hours of oral history interviews with transgender and LGBTQ survivors of the early AIDS epidemic, conducting extensive archival research, and hosting LGBTQ Community Residencies in 6 cities across the US. Read more about “Sean Dorsey’s THE MISSING GENERATION LGBTQ/AIDS Oral History Project”.

THE MISSING GENERATION features full-throttle dance, luscious partnering, intimate storytelling and theater – performed by Dorsey’s stellar, multi-generational ensemble of dancers: Sean Dorsey, Brian Fisher, ArVejon Jones and Nol Simonse. Sean Dorsey is an award-winning transgender and queer choreographer who has toured his work to 30 cities across the US.

Dorsey created a lush multi-layered soundscore featuring the voices and remarkable real-life stories recorded in these oral history interviews, Dorsey’s own writing, and original music from a stellar team of composers: Alex Kelly, Jesse Olsen Bay, Ben Kessler, and Jeffrey Alphonsus Mooney.

THE MISSING GENERATION toured to 20 cities across the US between 2015 and 2020 – during week-long Community Residencies that featured performances, “Generations Positive” inter-generational community conversations; master classes; free trans-friendly dance workshops; “Dance Your Story” self-expression workshops for LGBTQI people and people living with HIV/AIDS; and other custom-designed residency activities.
